tuesday's child sadly lacks grace

This is probably the only time in my life I wish I were a cat, because then when I fell off my bed - it's about 4 feet off the ground - I'd be able to reposition myself and reach the ground less painfully.
I remember rolling off an 8 foot ledge in 6th grade after being surprised by someone's sudden entrance, but I think I was so shocked that it didn't hurt as much as it does now. Damn, and I'm supposed to be smiley for the prospective student panel I'm speaking on tomorrow afternoon, too. Normally I'd be tempted to take an over the counter Tylenol, but ever since my neighbor was convicted of armed robbery to feed his pain killer addiction I've become really cautious.

Date: 2007-02-26 09:24 pm (UTC)I must point out that while I'm certain that the actual experience was not pleasant, the mental image you painted of the event occuring was rather amusing with the right sound effects (in this case, a slide whistle). ;)
I've never been a big fan of painkillers myself. I rarely get headaches, so I don't even have them in my apartment most of the time. I think most of the people who get addicted to painkillers aren't taking them to relieve excessive pain, but rather to deal with any pain, great or small. This is also true of many who get hooked on anti-depressants; while some people really do need medical assistance for extreme depression, others take it to avoid dealing with problems. People just want to be numbed to everything unpleasant, and life isn't like that. If your cat dies, you're supposed to feel depressed. That's normal. All the meds do is let you put off dealing with it right now.

It seems like in the US doctors tend to overprescribe painkillers to avoid patients' complaints; I know in Asia the amount of painkillers prescribed is generally less, and patients tend to rely more on holistic analgesics.

Exactly... you're not trying to medicate for everything that you experience.
