I drove by myself for the first time to the carpool meeting spot because Ellie wanted to sleep in, and somehow I felt unimaginably free. I was listening to "Morning Passages," from Phillip Glass's the Hours soundtrack, and suddenly I felt as if I was finally at pace with the rest of the world. Somehow I had stumbled my way onto some global harmony, and for a few minutes before I had to go I had a sense of why things were, had stumbled upon some hidden universal peace. Phillip Glass is a genius. That's what it feels like in my inadequate words to discover some musical truth in a wonderfully complex, mysteriously flowing piece of music. I don't think I've ever met anyone else who actually knows what I'm talking about, to be honest, someone who is familiar with this weird musical translation.

Yup, I probably sound like I've gotten a little too familiar with weed. I assure you that for the moment I am completely and utterly insane.

I think I've sat through the dullest English class of my entire life. Seriously. I probably sound like a total cultural barbarian saying this, but I honestly didn't see what was so great about Louise Glück's poetry reading. My brain might be totally fried or exhausted, but I didn't see the deep meanings or pretty figurative language or whatever. And her voice-well, I see why we need voice actors. I'm surprised that the people in the audience didn't all fall asleep listening to her drone. Amazingly enough, I didn't actually take a nap during class. And now, may I present to you:

[livejournal.com profile] theladyrose's tried and tested ways to stay awake during boring classes (which thankfully she employs very rarely):
-Count in binary on your fingers and see if you can count to 1000 by the end of class.
-Practice sitting up with really good posture. Not only is it good for your spine, but you'll gradually feel more awake.
-Doodle or write random things down in your notebook. Just make sure you keep your hand moving the entire time.
-Try to see if you can bend your fingers on each hand one on top of each other. See if you can do it with both hands. This requires a certain amount of flexibility in the finger, and the mild aches and pains you feel will keep you awake.
-I've found the following to be the most effective: stretch your legs out and try to touch your toes while sitting in your desk. See how long you can keep your legs parallel to the ground.

One of my favourite games when I'm stuck on the bus or train or whatever, is to guess the age of the people around me and think of names which suit them. It amuses me anyway!

Ah, sadly, horosha's tips aren't nearly as slyly sophisticated
- analyze moral philosophy
- draw lewd cartoons
- althernate between sitting up straight and slouching just so your body doesn't feel sluggish
- argue constantly with the teacher

Most of the time I end up doing crossword puzzles anyway. They get me through the day =D

Crossword puzzles, eh? I tried making one of those some time ago, and it was bloody hard. I ended up redrawing it three times because I miscounted the number of boxes for a few words. Whoops.

During English classes I end up trying analyzing film scores (because I don't do that all the time...really...OK, I lied) or reviewing my favorite Avengers episodes. But of course I still pay attention...

Hey you, can I just tell you how much I agree with you. Louise Glück's poetry is possibly the vaguest most disgustingly wanna-be lyrical pieces I have ever had the misfortune to read. Not only that, but I had to sit there for an hour and 15 minutes of deep torture to my selectively poetic ears listening to her *drone* on and on about God and how wonderful and fantastic her flower can be. That garden poem was probably about the point where my eyelids began to drop in front of my hazy eyes for who in the world can sit through five different sections of poetry about a garden? Perhaps if she had used clearer metaphors she would have received my attention at least, but no, I felt as if I had to actually BE the author of those poems in order to fully understand their true meaning, which is a perfectly good way to write poetry so long as you don't plan to ever publish them and therefore introduce confusion into the world. Needless to say, Sophie was forced to poke me a few times in order to wake me up; each time I was awoken, I would wish that I wasn't still in that stuffy room listening to Glück rant about smelling the heavens, but rather in my warm cozy bed, to which I shall go to right now. :: goes off to bed to sleep peacefully :: see you.

Ehehehe...I nearly ended up poking you a few times, actually. I don't think the Fraz noticed, though.

"It might take you some time to get used to her style of reading." Yeah, right.

Good tips. But man, that was boring. I occupied my time drawing a little animal on each page of my agenda book.

... Damnit. I still can't get over how BORING that was.

I nearly ended up grabbing my notebook in the middle of class to look like I was taking notes but instead try to refute the fact that the protagonist of a certain TV show isn't gay or misogynist. And then I realized it would look rather fishy if I randomly just started taking notes halfway through the movie, so I didn't.

I have to see those animal drawings sometime.
