asexual clichés

My mother and I are passing outside a stationery store and take a moment to peek in at the merchandise.

I am chuckling over a proto-Lolcats featuring a kitten wearing a funny mask.

My mother is laughing, too. "Porn for women! That's just brilliant!"

I turn to stare at her. "What are you talking about?"

She points at the calendar next to the cat one. It features a shirtless man vacuuming the carpet.

Such are the differences between how an asexual views the world and how most others do. But at least I have an idea of what else I should get Mom for Christmas!

That's funny. My porn usually involves hot butch leatherdykes fisting each other. Hm. *ponders*

*cuddles* I miss you. :(

Actually, I think one of the criticisms of that book (which I've seen before) (and also, I could be making this criticism up, but I could swear I've read/heard it somewhere before) is that it ties women's sexual desire with men doing housework. Like, not only does it assume, I suppose, that women cannot feel sexual desire normally, but only do so when guys do something nice. Like housework. Also, because it is supposed to be funny, so that while guys and visuals that fulfill their sexual fantasies are normal, women only feel sexual desire or have visuals that portray their fantasies in the realm of humor, because of course their sex drive isn't normal. Or maybe, because it puts men doing housework in the realm of fantasy, as if it were impossible for men to perform housework in the real world otherwise.

Upon looking over what I just read, I am less and less sure that I read this somewhere, and am pretty sure I made it all up. Or made some of it up. And because I am confused and trying to figure out what I'm thinking or what I may have read, it came out all incoherent. Either way, I think while it was semi-valid in my head, I don't think it makes very much sense when written out.

hm, i don't think I get how you noticing and laughing at the lol-cat and your mom noticing and laughing at the half-naked man constitutes differences in the way asexual people and everyone else see the world.

To be honest, I think it's more a testament to my complete and utter obliviousness! I'm a terribly unobservant person when it comes to noticing sexual cues, and a lot of other asexuals seem to share a similar cluelessness. But it could also be that I mistakenly assume how much non-asexuals tend to read sexuality in "everyday" situations.

Hmmmm. I was in the doctor's office with my husband flipping through a parenting magazine. There was a picture of a buff, shirtless guy holding a baby. I showed the picture to Hubby and said, "Look babe, porn for women!"

If you know what to get your Mom for Christmas, your ahead of me! :)
