Best line I've heard all night: "Do you think we'll have any problems having a bunch of Nazis with gas masks running down fraternity row?"

We officially start shooting on the first episode of Birnkrant 616 tomorrow — because the senior crew members are merciful and kind, I don't have to go to the early morning on location shoot for the opener.

I don't know if I've mentioned this, but I don't actually know how to even turn *on* the camera. I also don't have the Dr. Strangelove-type gloves to handle the 1k lights, which is also problematic.

Theoretically I'm operating first camera/doing sound/all of the other random things that a lackey's meant to do, but it should be pretty exciting. The crew members are great to be around; I've grown to appreciate all of the detailed work that goes into making films and TV shows. Previously I had never even thought about the difficulties of hiring SAG actors as a semi-non-official university organization, acquiring location shooting permits (coincidentally, Gilmore Girls was shooting on campus this afternoon), and finding ways of coercing acquaintances to use their cars/residences for certain scenes. I sort of have a better idea of what the different kinds of camera equipment do and what the different shots are, but it is still a little weird being the only non-cinema major on this episode's crew. Alas, I can't sympathize about the difficulties of obtaining universal production numbers to check out dollies and jigs.

Classes are getting a little hectic as midterms are two weeks from now; I have two exams and two papers to write. My parents are coming down to visit on Wednesday, so I really need to figure out how to write/study while juggling the mid-week shooting schedule. I can still squeeze in tutoring and copy-editing, but I think I have to drop post-production editing training. I'm barely passing my freshman writing seminar (I mean this quite literally); our instructor gives us great criticism, but she also doesn't seem to realize the importance of retaining our scholarships by maintaining a certain GPA, which is starting to stress me out. (I am too lazy and tired to correct that misplaced modifier.) Scarily enough there's one student in my specific section who's doing as well as I am and one student who's doing better. It's hard not to give up hope in that arena; I'm tempted to spend my energy on my other classes to help make up for it. Xiaolin and Irene helped drown our collective sorrows in eating Chinese food and continuing our Veronica Mars season 1 marathon.

I think I might harbor a masochistic streak because I managed to get into a 8-week noncredit seminar on Asian-American issues because it sounded really interesting. It's probably a good idea that I didn't end up taking that 5th class at the start of the semester after all.

I have a feeling that I'll be testing out my "action music cues heard first thing in the morning can make up for an hour less of sleep" theory extensively for the next few weeks. But on the bright side, I have a new Danger Man-themed header which came out OK.

Gilmore Girls was shooting on campus?! So they don't shoot the 'Rory goes to school' scenes at Yale? THATISSOCOOL! Did you see Lauren Graham or any of the others?

Very few college campuses are shot on actual location. USC and UCLA, the two big universities in Southern California closest to film studio who graduate many young filmmakers :), tend to fill in as "generic college campus" settings as it's too expensive and time-costly to visit each and every college. I know that USC has filled in for Harvard in Legally Blonde (the actual law school building at Harvard is kind of ugly) and Brown in the OC as well as a lot of other places from what I've heard.

I only saw the extras milling around for some sort of registration/welcome to college set up for Rory. My roommate, who's a big GG fan, said that she saw Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel for a few moments as well as some other guy, but I can't remember which one.

You are the last person to lecture me on overcommittment :P Yeah, I was worried that I was taking on too many activities at first, too, but I figure that they help force me to manage my time better. That, and it's nice to have a break from studying/outlining/writing papers. There's just so much that I want to do; I'm already cutting back on a few other things.

You know what it's like, I'd imagine :)
