the writer wore menace shoes
Sep. 19th, 2006 08:25 pmIf you have no interest in the Prisoner, then the rest of this entry will be rather pointless for you to read.
Mike Reiss, one of the producers and writers on the Simpsons came to talk about his experience working on the show this evening; he's probably the best comic I've ever heard. Or maybe it was because we all like bashing the University of Arkansas for no good reason.
Being the obscure!fangeek that I am, I waited around half an hour afterwards to ask him how the heck they ever got Patrick McGoohan to appear for the Prisoner spoof episode, "The Computer Wore Menace Shoes," considering that he hasn't really done anything since Braveheart

His reply (roughly paraphrased):
To be honest, we have absolutely no idea. We didn't realize how hard he was to get a hold of until everyone else was asking us "How did you get him to appear?" He was really a great guy to work with, quite nice...we really had no idea how lucky we were until afterwards. Isn't there supposed to be a movie based on the Prisoner coming out soon?
That now leads me to the question-BBC is doing a Prisoner remake with Dr. Who's Chris Eccleston next year, but is the on-again, off-again "movie in the works" actually happening? There were some rumors flying around about that last year, but they panned out. I didn't want to ask anything more of Reiss as I didn't want to take up too much of his time, but he was really kind and patient with everyone who wanted to ask him a question or for his autograph.

Date: 2006-09-20 11:54 am (UTC)Last I heard the BBC was still working on a mini-series/television film for late 2007 release, but I don't know what's happened to that. I'll yell if I find anything new.
You rock!

Date: 2006-09-25 08:00 am (UTC)I'm a little confused about the BBC production-I heard that Chris Eccleston, the 9th Dr. Who, was cast as number 6, but I was a little confused as to whether or not the new Prisoner would be a loose mini-series adaptation or whether or not it would be more of a traditional remake. It seems like a Village conspiracy to keep the fans suitably unsure of which side they're on :P

Date: 2006-09-20 06:41 pm (UTC)as an aside, my friend matt met the paddy when he was auditioning for a columbo that the p was directing a while back and he loved him though he didn't know him from a hole in the wall because as he puts it, 'he was the friendliest guy i've ever met.' he said they talked about british comedy for a long time, that the p loves monty python, and that he's a really good mimic.

Date: 2006-09-25 08:08 am (UTC)The last rumor I remember hearing was that Michael Bay was directing. Then I heard that the Island was supposedly a really screwed up Prisoner remake; at that point I gave up trying to figure out what actually happened to the movie.
Thanks for the P story! It is rather nice to hear about the warm fuzzy side of him after hearing about all of those accusations of the P being rather a difficult character to work with in terms of temper and perfectionism. The P seems to snap in the rare instances at those who deserve it, though. But yes, that story did make my day :)
I've heard from a family friend who used to own a limousine service that Peter Falk is a lovely guy in person, much in the same vein as the P your friend described. No wonder they got along so well as friends :)
