Seeing as today would have been Agatha Christie's 115 birthday, it seems appropriate to sign the petition to save the BBC Hercule Poirot TV series.

On a completely random note, apparently Microsoft Word does not believe that "commodification" or "patriarchical" are words. Hmm.

I still don't have a script for the Nazis vs. college students sitcom I'm working on, which is bad because we have our first production meeting today. Also, I have absolutely no idea where to get heat resistant gloves for handling a camera I don't really know how to operate.

I'm pretty much terrified of accidentally dropping the camera on the director's foot, basically. It's also kind of weird being one of the few non-cinema majors on the crew, but they are awesomely random so that makes up for the potential awkwardness.

Edit: I forgot to mention this earlier, but [livejournal.com profile] mvmontgomery has the dubious distinction of being the LJ user to leave me my 2,000th comment (yes, sadly enough I've been on LJ for *that* long.) Thanks very much!

Maybe because...

...the word is patriarchal? Don't know about "commodification" though...

Thanks for pointing that one out, whoever you are. Now I really regret clicking the ignore button for that word during spell check...

Bonnie, you are an InDesign layout goddess! At first I was a little wary of the whole horizontal tabloid setup because that format two years ago looked kind of trasy and really tabloid like, but this looks so professional that I almost thought it was the Around the Circle newsletter! And more power to both of you for keeping it a weekly paper-I've done both weekly and biweekly, and weekly can get unbelievably gruelling in terms of deadlines but the satisfaction in turning out the paper is well worth it.

Just a few comments:
-You'll really want more staff writers as time goes on. Generally editors should be in a position where they write when they want to write and have time to edit and do layout :)
-What exactly is the focus of your content? Right now I'm getting a very newsletter-y feel from the new teacher spotlight and student of the week features, but then again, you haven't really had any events to cover so far. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but you do run the risk of covering redundant topics featured in Around the Circle, Yearbook, etc. I do like the guest columnist of the week feature; it's a way of bringing in fresh ideas.

I also like the Letters from the Editor section; it's a good way of making the paper more accessible to the readers, explaining stylistic/content changes and evaluating what you want for the paper. Corrections are good and were pretty much ignored in the past, which caused a lot of trouble with the admin.

Are there ways you can have the articles have more of an analytical/op-edish kind of content?

(I have a major bias for monthly-style long features about non-event related student life issues.)

-If you ever want a "reflecting back on my Casti/Counterpoint" experience column for the weeks when you can't find a current student columnist, I'd be happy to fill in :) Call it artistic ego-stroking if you will; as much as I enjoy copy-editing I'm starting to miss writing my own features and publishing them whenever I wanted to.

So, basically:

The more reader-friendly and accessible approach to layout definitely works; it's a more interactive publication than it ever was. The major concern I have is a redundancy in content with the other publications; what are the kinds of features can you do that make Counterpoint Weekly unique and engaging?

If you or Kelly ever have any troubles with content or editorial nitpicking or whatever feel free to ask me.

yeahhh lack of events makes trying to come up with a feature fun. i think the next features on spirit week (as in, uh, actually whats going on? i guess? student reactions and stuff instead of just what each day is), center spread is on the darfur rally in sf, and next weeks feature is gym and opinions and such... i think most of it IS redundent right now - but stuff that we really should cover. stuff like featured student and student opinion column keep it interesting ish. [i have a feeling featured student is more amusing for kelly and i to do than it is for anyone to read... hahaha]

anyways- thanks SO much for your feedback :) its great hearing what you think. trust me, i wont hesitate to ask you questions!
