Gun rampage at Montréal college

When eating breakfast this morning I was wondering if there were ever any cases of student violence in universities; in my lifetime I can only remember incidents that occured in high school such as Columbine.

Well, I guess there are. And though I know it's just coincidence, it creeps me the hell out that such a thought crossed my mind just before this atrocity occured.

It's called college football.

Good point. The USC-Nebraska game is going to have a lot of carnage, I'd imagine...

I have to admit, USC football has a kick-ass theme song. It's worth swinging by a game just to hear the brass band.

Well, the brass section sounded kind of uncoordinated last time I heard them practicing on Wednesday. Then again, at the time I was attached to a bunch of electrodes and had on a pair of noise generating headphones for a psychology experiment. The percussion is pretty kick ass.

And luckily for you, the alumni section has just been expanded (http://www.dailytrojan.com/media/storage/paper679/news/2006/09/13/News/Alumni.Get.Student.Seats-2269186.shtml?norewrite200609150344&sourcedomain=www.dailytrojan.com) substantially in case you are interested in going to the games anytime soon.

By the way, would you be interested if I adapted your musical casting flyer (http://madbard.livejournal.com/709448.html) and stuck up some up around campus? I need to put up a bunch of flyers for something else anyway, so it wouldn't be any trouble.

That'd be wonderful! The most logical place to put them would be at the music and theatre buildings, if they're on your distribution route.

Sure thing! My dorm is close by to that part of campus, and I wanted to stop by that area to attract some participants for a game show.

I owe ya one. (I'm not sure one what, but I owe it to ya.)

BTW, I'd suggest printing out the PDF version of the notice, rather than the livejournal page.

Sounds good. I was probably going to shorten the character descriptions a bit and provide a link to the PDF web link for more details if that's OK.

Sure. Feel free to trim the part about there being no pay. They'll find out soon enough. :)

BTW, if you would, please let me know when you've put up the fliers (or, if there's been a change in plans, that you can't do it). That way I know I don't need to email them to USC's drama department and beg. :)

I was wondering if there were ever any cases of student violence in universities;

Oh yeah. In my years of teaching (a span of about 25 years) I can remember several, one in particular where a student opened fire on a professor because he didn't like a grade. That one made us especially nervous.

Oh my God! I hope that the professor wasn't seriously injured or killed. Did any of these incidents involve someone at your university?

The breakouts of school gun violence I can remember all occured in high school-the demographics seem to be generally shifting towards younger teenage males. When I was in second grade the psychologically deranged boy who sat next to me actually brought in a hand grenade he assembled himself.

I believe the professor was killed. It happened in the late 80s if I recall. I don't remember all the details.

However, I remember the time period because it was around the time I had a scary druggie head student in one of my night script classes. The whole class was all wary of him and he often talked in non sequitars.

One night, when he was absent, another student, a tall African American man who was a cop in his day job, came up to me and opened the briefcase he usually brought to class. There was a .45 inside.

He said, "Don't worry. If the guy ever goes nuts, I can take him out."

I felt a lot safer after that. :)

It's official, we need to talk. I suck at life, so cell phones work. If you have verizon, you can call me any time (except the times listed below), but if you don't, it has to be after 9pm my time tonight or at any time during this weekend.

This weekend is Roanoke Pride (http://www.roanokepride.com/), so I will be busy. Such as tonight my friend -slash- girl I like is performing in a drag show, tomorrow I have a workshop and then I might be going clubbing or to a party, and then Sunday is the official pride fest from 11-6 pm my time.

So yes, calling is good.

Heh, unfortunately as I live on the West Coast in Alias-land that's 6 PM my time, and my free minutes only kick in after 9 PM Pacific time. Perhaps sometime in the evening your time on Sunday would be good? Saturday I have tutoring project stuff/scholarship student event/football game to go to, and Sunday morning/afternoon I have copy-editing and my first TV show shooting.

I have a new cell phone number that's not actually a New York area code, so how about I call you?
