I have no idea why this popped into my head, but it did:

If you had to choose, would you rather read Charlotte Brönte with a touch of Jane Austen or Jane Austen with a touch of Charlotte Brönte?

(Did I steal that question from Little Women? I could swear I remember reading of this question somewhere before.)

Edit: I'll confess, I'm rooting for Charlotte with just a bit of Austen's wit

I'd probably go for Charlotte Brontë with a touch of Jane Austen. Much as I love Jane Austen (her books, not those wretched BBC adaptations), I do love the gothic and you don't get much more gothic than Charlotte Brontë.

Definitely Charlotte with a little Jane. Jane kind of never has anything to say at all, but she might brighten up Charlotte's day a little. Then again, who needs their artistic integrity damaged? Forget the Jane altogether.

i personally found austen to be the more capable writer--and bronte's uber-gothic-soapy-drama kind of turned me off. so austen w/ a bit of bronte, ah oui!

CB--or any of the brontes--and no austen. austen writes about the pretty aspects of life in a (for me) mediocre way, the brontes write about harsh and ugly things in a beautiful way. there's simply no contest, in my eyes.

oh, hands down to Austen. so entertaining and funny! Bronte is too mellowdramatic.
