Adoption and foster care - wow, that's intense. I am in serious awe of the social workers who juggle their enormous caseloads as I don't think I'd be able to handle that kind of bureaucracy. That's one of the reasons why I'd rather go into occupational therapy/counseling or clinical psychology, so that I can spend more time working one-on-one or in smaller groups in greater depth.
I definitely think that you can learn so much from community service/social work, but do you think it would be effective if it were mandatory? An increasing number of high schools and even colleges require a certain number of service hours in order to graduate (mine did), but there's the risk of students overlooking the intrinsic value of the work they're doing in order to polish their college applications or resume.
