Everyone who grows up middle class or better should spend at least six months doing social work. I worked for the state's adoption and foster care agency for two years soon after college and it really opened my eyes to what other folks have to go through.
I grew up working class and relatively poor, but although my family had challenges, it wasn't anything like what I saw.
