At least in today's world women have places they can got to if they become involved in a abusive relationship. The women of my Grandma's generation didn't really have anywhere to go if they were stuck in that situation.

I really feel sorry for the older women. Maybe they felt that as horrible as prison life is it was better than living with a abusive man.

Sometimes I think the real key to stopping domestic abuse has to come with society teaching men to respect women and for women to respect themselves.
